Meet Sahas: Our Bright Star

  • 7 Feb, 2024

Sahas, a nine-year-old boy, who stays with his family in a small room, beside a dumpsite area in West Bengal, loves to go to school and explore new things. He wants to learn and grow every day. Sahas goes to a nearby government school and is in the fourth grade and also happens to be a student of our ABIM center. His dad is a fitter, and his mom takes care of their home. Even though they don’t have much space, they’re a close-knit family.

Within the classroom, Sahas’s thirst for knowledge shines brightly. His inquisitive nature fuels lively discussions with his teacher, earning him both admiration and gentle scoldings for occasionally disrupting the class in his eagerness to share insights with his friends. Undeterred by challenges, Sahas finds solace in his cherished corner of the classroom, surrounded by his loyal companions. Despite attempts to make them sit separately in the classroom, the bonds of friendship persist.

Beyond academics, Sahas finds joy in the company of a furry friend named Lalu, a golden-brown dog who embodies loyalty and playfulness. “Dogs, definitely dogs!” he exclaimed when asked about his favorite animal. “My maternal grandfather has this amazing dog named Lalu. He’s been part of our family for four years now. Lalu was just a little puppy when Grandpa found him near a tea stall, hungry and alone. Since then, he’s been like a brother to me, always by my side, ready for any adventure.”

Sahas also takes on the role of caretaker for his neighbors’ children, showcasing maturity beyond his age. “I love spending time with the children in our neighborhood,” he shared earnestly. “They’re like my extended family. Sometimes, when their parents need to work at the landfill, they trust me to watch over them. We play games, share stories, and laugh together.”

The recent transition to a larger classroom at the ABIM Centre has infused Sahas and his peers with renewed enthusiasm. The introduction of a tiffin-sharing tradition fosters a sense of belonging and togetherness, reinforcing the bonds of friendship that define their journey together.

In Sahas’ own words, “I’m really happy with the changes we’ve seen at the ABIM Centre. It feels like a second home now, where I can learn, grow, and share meals with my friends. Every day is a new adventure, and I’m excited to learn new things here.”

Sahas’ experience epitomizes the transformative power of education and community support. His strong optimism, fueled by a nurturing environment, illuminates the path toward a brighter tomorrow. With each passing day, Sahas embraces the possibilities that lie ahead, guided by the unwavering support of Love Without Boundaries (LWB), India and the resilience of his spirit.
