Dreaming Big: Janaki from our Anand Believe in Me Centre

  • 3 Feb, 2023

Today, we would like you to meet 3 years old Janaki. He and his parents live near one of the largest landfills in Kolkata. Their house is one of the closest to the landfill where the stench is unbearable. It becomes especially difficult during the monsoons when rainwater falls on the garbage mountain and washes and brings a part of it right in front of Janaki’s door.

Janaki’s father goes from door to door and sells fruits. When his parents came to know about an after-school center to be opened in their area, they were very happy. They were glad that their son will now have someone to guide them through his studies. It was a huge relief for them as parents.

Janaki is a very quiet child who loves sitting next to the teacher and completing his assignments. His teacher is extremely fond of him and loves his growing confidence with each passing day.

When asked about what he enjoys most about coming to the centre, Janaki mentions that he loves learning new things from his teacher. He feels very proud when his teacher appreciates him or gives him a “star” for being a good boy in class. He likes showing off the “star” to his parents and friends after going back home.

Providing children with access to education is a globally recognized solution to providing them a better future. Thank you for being a part of helping children like Janaki finally have a chance to learn to read and write.
